I watch embarassedly as Rider walks up to the pillar, takes the picture of his brother out of his pocket, and places it with the others. All of them are expertly painted, with high detail in every one. As he does so, the whole crowd surrounding the pillar says “May they rest in peace”, in unison. All of these people are probably here because of me. So many experiments - no, living, feeling creatures - are suffering because of me.
I lower my head at the thought. I turn around and walk away. As I make my way through the crowd, I find myself speeding up. Eventually, I find myself at a full-speed run with no destination; my cloak flapping behind me. I quickly become lost in the maze of the cave, and I stop to take a breath of air. I hear a series of taps and wheel around. Rider comes running from around a corner and locks eyes with me.
“Human! Don’t do that! What if you get caught?!” Rider says between pants. “No! I don’t care if I get caught. I helped murder your brother and countless others, so just leave me alone!” I reply before turning to run again, but tripping on a rock. I throw my hands out to catch myself, but the cloak hinders my hand movement, and I end up falling and tumbling ten feet before coming to a stop on my side. Rider runs over to me and offers a hand. I do my best to slap it away.
“Get away from me!” I say angrily. “Also, I have a name. It’s Ren. I don’t know WHY you keep trying to treat me like a good guy, but no, I am very obviously not!”. I stand up and brush myself off.
“I… I treat you like a good guy because… because you CAN be one.”
“Yeah, yeah, who wants a good guy that has helped out with over a hundred murders? No one!”
“It doesn’t matter what you HAVE done. What matters is what you WILL do. Especially if you know what you’ve done and learn from it.”
“So, you’re saying that a villain can become the hero by just feeling sorry?”
“That’s one way to put it, but basically. You might need a bit of redemption before everyone here fully accepts it.”
“That sounds absolutely unrealistic and crazy, but I guess I can try. I think I already have some ideas forming. Anyway, I should go. My sister is probably worried sick.”
I go to take the cloak off, but Rider stops me. “You should keep that. It’ll help you keep dry in the rain. Consider it… a gift. From the Glyphwolf tribe.”, he says. I smile and keep the cloak on. We walk together back to the entrance, and Rider moves the boulder out of the way. As soon as the boulder rolls back in place, I take the cloak off and clean myself of the mud from earlier. I walk back to the base and hide the cloak.
When I walk in, I see Julia hunched over a workbench. She hears me enter and says, “Ren! I just got a MAJOR breakthrough! I found out how to recreate gunpowder!”. I blink in surprise at the thought. Gunpowder allows for guns. Guns allow for more killing. Against my better judgment, I walk over and say, “Wow! That… crazy that you found that out while I was on my walk, which was very relaxing, in case you wanted to know.”. I avoid telling her of the Glyphwolves because I know what she’d say. That they’re just playing a dirty trick and that we need to exterminate them before they can exterminate us. “I’m going to go to sleep for REAL this time.”, I say.
When I lie down on my bed this time, sleep comes easily. I sleep well. VERY well. When I wake up, I find that I hadn’t tossed or turned in my sleep like I usually do. I hadn’t slept that good since… well, forever! I walk out to our makeshift bathroom and comb my short hair for no reason. As I walk out, I find Julia sleeping on the desk where she was the night before. I grab my knife, raise it… and lightly scrape the words “I’m going out to practice my craftsmanship. I have to have some sort of use after all! -Ren” into a piece of concrete that had fallen sometime before we arrived. I grab some supplies like a wooden bowl, a bamboo tube, and a brush.
I walk out the door and take a deep breath of fresh air. I grab the cloak that I had hidden earlier and run into the woods. Soon, I find what I was looking for. A tree that we call the “Icecore” because of its uniquely fragile and pure-white wood. I find another one next to it that has fallen over and broken into multiple pieces. I find a large piece of it and pull out my knife. I carve into it, etching lots of detail into every part. I finish after about five hours. I hold up a white mask shaped like a wolf’s face.
I find a patch of red flowers and pull out my bowl. I find a tree and cut it. Soon, white latex starts to drip from the cut. I place the bowl to catch the drips as I locate a stream and fill the bamboo tube with water. I come back and add the red flower petals to the water. I start a small fire and place the tube just over it by using sticks to lift it.
After another long while, I take the bamboo tube off the fire and grab the now full bowl of latex. I shove a rock into the bamboo tube and press it down with a stick to prevent the flower petal from getting out. I tip the tube over the bowl, and red water spills out. I mix the latex with the water using my brush to make red paint. I dip my brush in the paint and decorate my mask.
I hold my finished mask up to the sunlight and smile. I put on my cloak and mask and stand up. I make my way over to the stream from before and look into it. Through the eyeholes of the mask, I see that my disguise works perfectly. No one in the Glyph Tribe will know that I was the one who helped murder 79 of their fellow tribe members. I make my way back home and hide the cloak and newly-made mask in the same place where I hid my cloak earlier.
When I walk inside, I find that Julia is still very much asleep. I shake her and wake her up. “Hmm?” she says sleepily. “Oh! Sorry, I slept in. It must have been later that I realized last night.” She brushed her hair away from her face and stretched. She looks out the window and calculates. “Wow. I slept until 3:46 in the afternoon. That’s a new record.” she turns and reads the message I had written earlier in the day. “So, how did your crafting thing go?”
“Eh. I tried to make something, but it turned out horrible, so I threw it away.” I lie.
“Gotcha. Y’know, I think we should, like, take a break from all the killing and just… take a moment. Admire what we DO have.”
“What’s… what’s with the change of heart?”
“Ha ha, don’t call it that! It’s just that when you went out for a walk yesterday, it got me thinking. We’ve been kinda ignoring nature.”
“OK… I think I’m picking up what you’re putting down…”
“I think that we need to just take the beauty of nature in instead of ignoring it.”
“Yeah… I like that idea.”
This was going too well. I could take daily walks and visit the Glyph clan while I’m there. Julia wouldn’t question a thing about me being gone for a long time. “Well, that just means I can take a walk tonight, too. I’ve never slept that well for as long as I can remember.” Julia nodded her head. “Seems like I really need to get out then.” She said as she stood up. “I think a walk right now would do some good.” She grabbed a few things and walked out the door. “See you in a bit!” she called out.
Once I’m sure she’s gone, I also walk out of the base. I find and put on my cloak and mask. I walk to the clearing where Julia murdered Rider’s brother and find Rider there at the tree. Just as I had expected. I stand up and take off my mask. I walk over to Rider and put my hand on his shoulder. He jumped back 3 feet and yelped. “Gah! Ren! Don’t sneak up on me like that!” he said. His ears perked up at the realization that it’s me. “Oh! Ren! Uh… how are you? I know we just met yesterday, but… uh, yeah. How are you?”
“Good. You?” I say with a chuckle at his sudden embarrassment
“Still… upset about Kris’s passing. Oh yeah! So, now that you kinda have an ‘alliance’ with us, I figured you might be appearing in the den ever now and then. Of course, some of the members might not really appreciate having a human, much less one who murdered so many of us, in the den. So, to help fix that, I got started on a disguise for you. Would you mind going into the den so we can get it?”
“Sure. I also got started on a disguise.” I say as I hold up the mask I made
“Wow. Looks like we’re on the same page, then! Anyway, the den is this way.”
If you have any ideas for the name, I will gladly accept and consider them!

I dash through the forest, my feet inferior to the ones chasing me. Thankfully, I have a solution… I have “rocket boots”, per se. They’re just liquid lithium tanks attached to my boots. The lithium is very reactive with air, so when it combusts, it creates a force strong enough to propel any person (or animal) a large distance or for a long time, depending on how it is utilized. I activate them, giving me a boost of speed. Each canister is one-use and has to be replaced each time, but it should give me enough distance to reach a clearing.
An angered roar cuts through the silence of the forest. I ignore it and continue forward. As the liquid lithium tanks empty, I step up my running pace, trying to keep as much distance between me and the one who is chasing me. As I finally reach the clearing, I find myself almost cornered by a creature. Well, to be specific, it is not technically a creature. It shares a lot of features with us humans, but it also has similarities to a wolf too. It wears clothes like a human, but it cleans itself like an animal. I back up, but find myself trapped against a tree with nowhere to run. I take a deep breath and shout “Koara!” (“now” in our own made-up language). Suddenly, there’s a rustling sound, and someone jumps out of the tree behind me. She pulls out a long, samurai-like sword made of bone and uses their boots’ thrusters to propel herself down at the wolf-man.
In that moment, I see the world slow. As the girl from the tree “slowly” flies towards the wolf-man with her sword pointed downwards, I see something peculiar. The wolf-man’s face slowly transforms from a snarl into a look of terror. Our eyes meet for just a slow-second more before time resumes its normal flow. The girl from the trees drove their sword down, not noticing the wolf-man’s change in expression. The sword drove through his skull, going deeper and deeper until it hit the ground through his foot. Blood started to drip through his mouth and the wound in his foot and head. As the girl from the trees pulled the sword back out of the wolf, the wolf-man slumped and collapsed on the ground, dead.
“Holy crap, dude! I swear your acting gets better every day!” she said as she wiped the blood off her sword and onto the grass.
“Ha ha, not too bad yourself, sis.”
“Oh, for goodness sake, it’s ‘Julia’! Ju-li-a!”
I chuckle. Julia had been my metaphorical sister ever since we arrived here. There were five of us in total, but she wasn’t like the others. She was always there when I was struggling, she would help out with almost anything, and she was a GREAT cook. Even with the stuff in the wild, she could cook up a HEAVENLY meal. You wanted fries? Perfectly salted and cooked in home-made oil. Wanted pizza? Every ingredient hand-crafted, and the whole thing cooked to perfection. Even something a simple as strawberry jelly from her was amazing. I, however, came with entertainment. Bored and want to watch a movie? No need! I can do all the tricks in the book and do it like a pro. The others… well, they… they had some nice abilities too, but we don’t talk about them.
“Ren, what company do you reckon this one’s from?” Julia said, examining the body. “Hm… the form looks like HR-0, but I’ll have to examine it later.” I pick up the body and rest it on my back. “Let’s get this to base camp. As soon as the others realize we were here, they’ll be out for blood for the next week”. I say, already knowing what Julia is doing. “We hunt the oppressors, we hunt the destroyers, we hunt those who threaten us. We never back down. We’ll never give up. We will win the crown that we have deserved for centuries.”, she sang as she smeared blood on the tree; a warning to those who see or smell it. “Julia. We gotta go.”, I say again. This time, she hears me and stops singing. She stands up and wipes her hand on the grass. She picks up her sword and sheathes it. She nods, and we begin our journey home.
Before long, we reach base camp. The building, once abandoned, now looks like a raccoon’s nest, with piles of trash and blankets everywhere. I would love it if we could have a better-looking home, but all of us agreed that it would attract too much attention. I step inside and set the body down on a workbench. I examine some of the features, like the teeth and eyes. There are two companies that experiment to make creatures such as these: “HR-0” and “AN”. I don’t know what they stand for, but the HR-0 versions have a more realistic form, while the AN forms go for a more fantasy or tactic-built form. This one is an HR-0 Wolf, as their teeth are clearly canine, and the iris of their eyes covers all that you can see of the eye unless they look to the side, like a real dog or wolf.
I carry the body downstairs and toss it in a room labeled “HR-0 Victims”. I add another tally to the board next to it. I try to clear my head, but I can’t stop thinking about what I saw. The… almost human look of terror on the wolf’s face that I had seen during my Timeslow. I can’t believe that my Timeslow activated there. Normally, my powers allow me to control it, but it has never activated on its own. I shake the thought. It could’ve been my body reacting to the sudden appearance of Julia with her sword (although she does that a lot, and my Timeslow has never reacted), and the expression must have been my mind playing tricks on me. The Experiments have never had largely human emotions, and I doubt that that will change.
I climb back up the stairs and to the makeshift living room. “Identified as an NR-0 Wolf. That makes 79 in that category and 140 total.”, I say to Julia. “I’m gonna go to bed early tonight.” As I turn to leave, Julia calls out to me. “Hey, what was going on back there? When I came down from the tree, I noticed you were moving slightly, but rapidly, as if your Timeslow event triggered.”
“Yeah, it did, although I don’t know why. Normally, I have complete control over it, but this time was different.”
“Hmm”
“Also, I saw something weird. I don’t know if it was real or just my mind playing tricks on me.”
“What was it?”
“The NR-0 Wolf… just before you killed him, he looked… terrified. Like, the human emotion terrified.”
“Yeah, that was your mind. Those experiments don’t have emotions. Well, REAL emotions. All they know is get excited, cower, and get angry like a dog.”
I nod reluctantly. I want to believe she’s right, but there was something in the wolf’s eyes that felt real. Too real to be just my mind. I turn and go to the bedroom hallway. There are 6 doors. One is the entrance, and the others are our bedrooms. Three of them are covered in leaf curtains. I head to my bedroom and sit on my makeshift bed. I lie down and try to convince myself that it’s all my head, that the experiments don’t actually have human feelings. I try and try to convince myself that, but I still can’t shake the feeling that it’s not. I get out of bed and walk back to the living room.
“I can’t sleep. I’m going to go take a walk. That should help clear my head.” I say as I turn to leave. As I walk out of the doorway, Julia calls out, “Just be extra careful! After we murdered the NR-0 Wolf, the others will most likely be on the lookout.” I nod my head and flash her a thumbs-up. As I walk outside, I hear an anguished howl, practically confirming her warning.
As I wander in the forest, it begins to rain, and I find myself retracing my steps to the tree in the clearing. I look at the ground, which is gradually getting muddier and muddier. As the rainwater reached the bloodstains, the ground slowly became red-tinted. I hear a rustle and activate my Timeslow, using it to hide in a bush without being seen. Lucky for me, I hid right before a wolf-man came through a thicket. I watch as it makes its way towards me. He gets closer and closer… but turns to the tree and collapses onto their knees, not caring about soiling their (probably) limited pants. They hung their head low and punched the tree again and again. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Either I had eaten bad food, or this experiment was ACTUALLY mourning.
I rubbed my eyes. This had to be a dream, right? A hallucination, some sort of trick. But no matter what I tried, I couldn’t wake up from this dream, if it even was one. I turn to leave, but I slip on a wet leaf and fall with a loud yelp. The wolf-man immediately hears me and whips around. They make their way to my hiding place cautiously. I reach for my emergency smoke bombs, but find that I left them at home… along with everything else. The wolf-man was soon towering over me. I tried to scramble away, but he picked me up by the back of my shirt and examined me.
After a long while, he finally set me down. “Hmph. I could just eat you right now…”, he said with a hint of disappointment in his voice. “...but there’s no honor in defeating an unarmed opponent.” He grabbed my arm and began to pull me along. Despite my struggles, I can’t seem to break free from his grip. “Don’t even try.”, he said flatly.”It may not be honorable to kill you now, but we can still find other things to do to you.” He finished with a mischievous tone in his voice. “Y’know, you’ve got some serious nerve coming back to that place. I thought that you humans would be smart enough not to go back to the location where you murdered someone in a very protective tribe.”
“Wait! Wait! I can explain!”
“Hmph. That’s what they all say.”
“No, seriously! I discovered something that I wanted to go back and confirm!”
He stopped suddenly. Curious about what I had “discovered”. “You… ‘discovered’ something? May I ask you what that is? Heh. Not that you really have a choice.”
“S-so, I got cornered by the other wolf right before he was killed. I have this ability to slow down time, and I normally have complete control over it, but this time, it activated randomly. For the longest time, I was told that you experiments had no complex emotion, but when my Timeslow activated, I saw a look of terror in the wolf’s face right before he was killed. Like, genuine terror. I wanted to confirm it, in a way.”
The wolf stayed silent for a second or two after I finished. Then, he started to laugh. He laughed and laughed maniacally. “Us? No complex emotion? Hahaha!!! Almost all we do is feel complex emotions. It’s not like the humans took an expressionless human’s DNA and copied it to make us. We haven’t changed for YEARS. I actually can’t believe you had to use a special ability to see that. Maybe you could use a direct view of what we live like day after day.” He continued to drag me through the forest along an invisible path. Along the way, I got pulled through multiple piles of leaves, and I got covered in mud from head to toe.
After what felt like an hour, we finally reached a stopping point. The wolf-man released his grip on my arm and grabbed a boulder on the underside of a cliff. He shoved it aside and grabbed me again. He threw me inside before also walking inside. He put the boulder back in place and howled loudly. “Hoooouuurrr!!!” Suddenly, the dark hallway started to get illuminated by tiny fires in the alcoves in the wall. After each one was lit, I saw a couple of wolves - probably the ones who lit the fires - step back before the next ones lit up.
After not long, a whole hallway was lit by the fires. The wolf-man started forward and tugged my arm; a silent but clear order to follow him. As we reach the end of the hallway, I hear another wolf-man speak. “Back from mourning already, Rider? I thought it would be a lot longer. Even with all this rain.” “Yes, Reed. I am back, but I will be out there again once I have finished my work here.” He pulls me out from behind his back where I was hiding (I am unarmed and best for bait, OK?).
“Y-you brought A HUMAN here?!?!”, Reed said, trying to keep his voice quiet.
“Yes. What of it?”
“A-a HUMAN! I’d bet the whole tribe that this one was involved with the murder of your brother if not THE murderer.”
“Yes. But I have plans already that involve them.”
“Rider. You realize that ninety-five percent of our losses were because of them, right? NINETY-FIVE! How do you know that that one isn’t hiding a bomb somewhere?”
“Rest assured, I checked him. He is completely unarmed. Even if he did have a homemade bomb on him, the rain would’ve detonated it already, killing him.”
Reed made a frustrated grunt. It was obvious who had won. Rider continued forward, only stopping to clap their hand on Reed’s shoulder and say, “I know what I’m doing. Don’t tell anyone. I don’t want a clanwide panic to start. Just… chill”. We continue across a questionable bridge. Halfway across, I realize I am holding my breath and release it. Once we get all the way across, we find ourselves at the entrance to another hallway. To think that we missed a cave this big was insane. As we make our way down the second hallway, I begin to hear voices echoing from farther down the way.
When we finally reach the end of the second hallway, the hallway branches into two others. One is clearly the way to the voices I heard earlier, but the other one seems to be some sort of dormitory hallway. Rider takes me away from the voices and through the other hallway. We pass multiple cave rooms. All of them look like they weren’t there before, but were chiseled out as a means to make space. Eventually, Rider stops and enters a room on the left. He motions me in and tosses me a cloth. I unfold it to find that it’s like a fuzzy cloak. “Put that on. It’ll avoid drawing attention to your… unique form”, he said. I put it on and pull the hood up. He stands up from searching in a wooden chest and puts something rectangular in his pocket. “Let’s go”, he said flatly before walking out of the room. I decide not to ask what he put in his pocket and follow him.
We retrace our steps and quickly find ourselves at the intersection from before. This time, we DO go towards the voices. After a short walk, the hallway opens up to a vast chamber full of makeshift light sources and shops. The whole chamber is bustling with wolf-people going from shop to shop and just chatting in general. I see a bunch of them gathered around a stone pillar in the corner, but it’s too far away for me to see what it is. We make our way through the crowd, which gets oddly quiet as Rider passes through. I do hear the occasional whisper of “That’s him”, “Who’s that with Rider?”, and “He’s going there, isn’t he?”. As we make our way through the crowd of the shopping area, I catch glimpses of the shops. The owners are ragged, with shaggy, matted fur and wrinkled clothes. They are selling some pretty random things. Toys, screwdrivers, and basically whatever you could think of.
“Where do they get all of that stuff?” I ask.
“Supply drops. HR-0 is generous enough to give us them, but they are often mostly useless.”
“Wow. I wish WE would get some supply drops every now and then.”
As if on cue, all of the wolf-people’s ears perk up, and they turn their heads towards a small pipe coming from the ceiling. Everyone except for Rider and the ones at the stone pillar start to rush towards the pipe. That’s when I hear it. A bunch of small clangs that the wolf-people must have heard with their improved hearing. I watch the pipe, and a small white box falls from it. It disappears into the crowd for a while before a young pup jumps up and down, saying, “I got it! I got it!”. Soon, everyone is back to their original places, doing whatever they were previously.
We fight through the crowd for a long time before reaching the stone pillar. The wolf-people make a clear pathway to it for Rider, and I see that there are pictures. Lots of them. The realization strikes me. I don’t have to count how many pictures there are, because I already know. 78. The pillar is surrounded by the pictures of those whom I had helped murder. And Rider was about to add the 79th.
Maybe I'll just post Splatoon stuff when I finish it. Dunno
