Don't get cooked...Stay off the hook!

— Pearl and Marina, catchphrase

Marina Ida (イイダ・マリネ , lit. Iida Marine?), also known as DJ_Hyperfresh (イイダ DJ E-DA?), is one of two members of Off the Hook, and the replacement for the Squid Sisters in Splatoon 2 as the host of Inkopolis News in their studio within Inkopolis Square. Her signature color is teal.

She is voiced by Alice Peralta.

Appearance

Normal

Marina's hair looks almost the same as most Octolings, but it is black like an Elite Octoling's hair instead of the usual red of a standard Octoling. Her hair is also worn down with a light teal color gradient at the edges. Like most Octolings, her eyes do not connect in the same way that Inklings' eyes do, but hers are a silvery/cool grey color as opposed to teal as well as eyelashes. Her eyes have a salmon pink hue in the center. Marina also wears a pair of teal headphones on her head. She has a short black sleeveless vest revealing her midriff, with the large silver zipper pulled most of the way down and grey low-rise shorts and fingerless black gloves that show her teal gradient fingertips. She wears teal tights under her shorts and has black boots that, like her vest, have their silver zippers pulled down.

Splatoon 2

In Octo Expansion, Marina, also known as DJ Hyperfresh (or in the chat logs, DJ_Hyperfresh) wears a more hip-hop attire than her pop stage outfit, resembles rapper Tupac Shakur. She wears a white bandana that is wrapped around her head with light gray designs, a long, silver chain necklace with an infinity symbol pendant (similar to her zippers from her stage outfit) around her neck, a black wristwatch and black chain bracelet on her right arm, a white turtleneck crop top, light teal capris, and silver bowed, gray-white shoes. She also retains her headphones.

As an Octoling warrior, Marina's tentacles were shoulder-length and she wore the Octoling Goggles, Octoling Armor, and Octoling Boots with Elite Octoling seaweed on the sides of her head, first shown in Marina's Chat Room and again on the back of the Splatoon 2 Live in Makuhari -Tentalive- limited-edition slipcover.

During the Final Fest, she wore a metallic dress with a number eight cut at the chest and very long sleeves that turned into gloves, and matching boots that were higher than the hem of the dress. She also had two diamond shapes painted on her face and a different pair of headphones, with diamond shapes instead of circles.

Splatoon 3

In Splatoon 3, Marina wears an orange/blue-colored pantsuit with the coat open revealing her sports bra, black gloves, and black-blue high heels. She wears a different pair of headphones with teal rings on the sides of them; her tentacles have the same hairstyle but are now dark shade of purplish brown with sparkly blue edges similar to her voice actress' former hair color, her fingers and toes are pointed and blue at the tips.

History

Past

Marina was born into "the oppression of Octarian society" as she would later describe it and began to be trained as a combat engineer from a very early age. She graduated from elementary training at the age of 9 after skipping multiple grades and for the next few years went on to play a part in designing the Flooder and other Great Octoweapons.

During the events of Splatoon, she had received multiple commendations as part of DJ Octavio's wasabi supply unit. As a high-ranking member, she was known throughout Octarian society, and was recognized by Agent 8 despite never meeting personally. She was present at the ‘concert’ hosted by DJ Octavio in his fight against Agent 3 but deserted shortly after hearing the Squid Sisters' Calamari Inkantation. According to witnesses, her only comment was "This changes everything."  Then she escaped to Mount Nantai, where she did not even understand the Inkling language. While there, she met an Inkling called Pearl Houzuki, who was practicing singing. Learning about Inkling culture and customs.

Marina attempted to find Pearl again. When she did, she showed Pearl her musical abilities through her demo of Ebb & Flow and Pearl immediately agreed to them starting a band, forming Off the Hook in the process. They released Ebb & Flow as their first single, which was a hit. By the time of their fourth single, around nine months after the events of Splatoon, they had become popular enough to take over hosting Inkopolis News from the Squid Sisters.

Splatoon 2

By the time of Splatoon 2, Off the Hook had become famous in Inkopolis Square for their music and for presenting Inkopolis News, in which Marina had a similar relationship with Pearl as Callie and Marie had. Their work included hosting Splatfest events, announcing the themes and singing and dancing to Color Pulse for the event's duration. Although Pearl and Marina did not make appearances during Octo Canyon, they were the first to break the news of Callie and the Great Zapfish's disappearances. They also announced their rescue on Inkopolis News, fulfilling a request to play Fresh Start over the credits.

Octo Expansion

When the game starts up the first time in the 3.1.0. update, Pearl will put an Inkopolis Fashion Focus about a trend of "squidkids with weird hairstyles" which are actually Octolings. As the broadcast ends, Pearl says that that was the only best thing, so she'll probably never do it again.

Off the Hook makes an appearance helping Agent 8 and Cap'n Cuttlefish by giving advice and commentary on Agent 8's tests. They meet the duo after Agent 8 passes Fake Plastic Station through Cap'n Cuttlefish's walkie-talkie as they were on Mount Nantai where the signal was the strongest, and Pearl and Marina call themselves MC. Princess and DJ_Hyperfresh respectively. If Agent 8 loses all of their lives in a test at least twice, Marina will offer to use Agent 8's test data and hack the Kamabo Corporation's data base to trick the test into thinking Agent 8 passed. If Agent 8 has less than 100 CQ Points, then Pearl will take money from her dad's wallet and Marina will transfer them into CQ Points.

After Agent 8 collects all the Thangs, Marina discovers it makes a blender and the Telephone that had them find the Thangs is intent on actually blending Agent 8 and Cap'n Cuttlefish into raw material. Before it can do so, however, Marina activates Agent 8's CQ-80's distress signal, summoning Agent 3 and breaking the blender and phone in the nick of time. Marina then sees an unconscious Agent 3's employee model of the CQ-80 and tells Agent 8 that they can escape through the hole Agent 3 made. As Agent 8 escapes the facility, Off the Hook shows up with a fleet of helicopters to pick them up along with Cap'n Cuttlefish and Agent 3.

As Pearl raps with Cap'n Cuttlefish again, the platform Agent 8 was on rises up and turns out to be a statue with the phone known as Commander Tartar intending on destroying all Inklings and Octolings with his blast of primordial ooze. Marina analyzes the statue and discovers that the statue is charging up via sunlight. If they can cover it with ink with the help of her prototype Hyperbombs that Agent 8 has to manually detonate, then the statue will stop charging, and Pearl will then finish it off with a "Hypersonic Scream" to destroy the statue, but they have to do so within three minutes, or Tartar will destroy Inkopolis.

After Agent 8 detonates them all, the statue is going to fire anyway, prompting Pearl to drop onto the platform below the helicopter and activate her Special, a giant Killer Wail stylized with her crown. As the statue fires, Pearl lets out a giant "Booyah" and battles with the statue's blast before pushing it back and destroying the whole statue with pink ink, along with Tartar, who's last words are telling the professor who created it that their reunion beckons before perishing. As the statue now collapses into the sea, Pearl and Marina celebrate with Cuttlefish, Agent 8, and a recovered Agent 3, and then watch the credits.

Personality and traits

Marina is more reserved than Pearl. She speaks in a sweet, gentle manner, very excitable, and can get very sassy in response to others, though she appears to be shy as well. While she is reserved, she isn't worried over expressing herself, given her visual design. She seems to be pretty forgetful at times and has been observed to forget the news she and Pearl are broadcasting.

Her timidity shows when she sees an Inkling watching her through the window; when she notices them, she smiles awkwardly and waves. This behavior most likely comes from the fact that many believe her to be an Inkling in spite of her different language and appearance, which are said to simply be some type of new fashion. Marina has not told Pearl of her past, and only talked to her about it after her file was extracted from Cuttlefish’s Octarian database. She expresses fear over coming out to the public regarding her being an Octoling, but Pearl insists that she’ll be beloved regardless.

In Japan, Marina's speech is occasionally rendered in katakana, indicating an accent of some sort. Unlike DJ Octavio, she does not speak completely in katakana. However, in the Splatune 2 liner notes, her lyrics are entirely in katakana, which is supposed to show that her singing is in a different language.

Marina is shown to be an enthusiast regarding all sorts of technology and incredibly skilled at operating heavy equipment, and when she first arrived at the Inkling world, she did not understand the language and had to learn it from Pearl.

Trivia

  • It is confirmed that Marina is 18 according to Nintendo's Splatoon Twitter and the Splatoon 2 art book.
    • Marina refers to Pearl with the honorific "senpai" in the Japanese version of the game, which is an honorific used to address somebody of an elder social rank in a field or trade.
      • This implies that Marina may be either be younger than Pearl or less familiar or experienced in the Inkopolis industry and looks up to Pearl as a mentor or a respected figure who came before her. The Splatoon 2 artbook reveals Pearl is 3 years older, despite being shorter than her.
  • Marina takes her Japanese name from the webfoot octopus while Marine is short for "marination" and may also come from her English name. The double hyphen implies that the given name is first, rather than the family name.
  • Marina has some similarities with Marie:
    • Marina has a teal color scheme that is mistaken for green like Marie's green color scheme due to both duos being similar.
    • They're both expressive and excitable like Callie, and sassy and sarcastic like Marie.
  • Pearl and Marina's English names are possibly a pun on Pearl Harbor, as Marina's name is a synonym for harbor.
  • Both Marina and Pearl subtly break the fourth wall during one of the dialogues for Blackbelly Skatepark. When Pearl says: “Hey, kids-don't spend all your time in front of the TV! Go play outside!”. Marina then responds: “But how can they play video games if they're not in front of a TV?!”, slightly breaking the fourth wall, since they are referring to the players rather than the Inklings in the audience.
    • This dialogue is also a reference to the Nintendo Switch, since it is a hybrid console that can be played both in front of a TV and as a handheld.
  • In Sunken Scroll #2, revealed that Marina and some Octarians were at the final boss battle of Splatoon and thought that it was a concert.
  • In the Italian version, Marina and Pearl's names are changed to Alga and Nori, as a reference to "nori seaweed" in Italian.
    • The duo is called "Tenta Cool" in the Italian version.
    • Marina's name is Marie's name in the Italian version.
  • The Octo Expansion reveals that Ebb & Flow was Off the Hook's first song and has three reiterations of it in the Expansion.
    • Marina made a demo tape by herself with a half-broken keyboard on Mount Nantai before she met Pearl.
    • An "Octo" remix of the song plays when there's one minute left on Turf War on the NILS Statue.
    • A choral version of it plays when Commander Tartar is destroyed and Inkopolis is saved at the ending.
  • Pearl and Marina's official amiibo come with their outfits from the Octo Expansion.
  • Marina's full name as revealed in Octo Expansion is a combination of her English name Marina and her Japanese name Iida. This is true in the Japanese version as well, though Marina’s given name is Marine instead, making Iida her family name. This effectively gives Marina (nearly) the same full name across both the English and Japanese localizations, one of the only characters this is true for.
    • The Italian translation also references this by making her full name Nori Marinis.
  • In Japan, Marina's fanbase is known as Iidachi (イイダチ), which is a portmanteau of Marina's name, Iida, and tomodachi (友達), the Japanese word for "friend." The English equivalent to this name may be "Marination," as seen on the Marination Lace-Ups.
  • In one of her dialogues in Kelp Dome, Marina says her favorite vegetable are beets, a pun on beats, referencing to the fact that she remixes/creates beats as a DJ.
  • Marina's Japanese surname (that she is commonly referred as) is Iida, which is a common surname in Japan but also short for Iidako, Japanese for webfoot octopus. This could mean that Marina is that particular species, as Pearl and the Squid Sisters all have Japanese names that are puns on squid species.
