Say it with sizzle... I'm Frye!

— Frye introducing herself in Return of the Mammalians

Frye Onaga (ウツホ Utsuho?, lit. Moray Eel), also known as the Dancing Gangster, is a major antagonist turned supporting character in Splatoon 3. She is an Inkling who resides in Splatsville. Along with her co-stars Shiver and Big Man, she is a member of the band Deep Cut, with whom she co-hosts both Anarchy Splatcast, the news show of Splatsville, and Splatfests. She has an excitable and enthusiastic personality. Her signature color theme is yellow. She is also a member of a clan of moray eel users, the Onaga Clan. When Agent 3 fights her in single-player mode, she rides what appears to be a hollowed out Octostomp, which houses the moray eels that she uses to attack.

She is voiced by Japanese singer Laura Yokozawa.[1]

Appearance[]

Frye is an Inkling with dark brown skin. She has golden eyes with orange pupils in the shape of a cross. Furthermore, she has a single eyelash on both of her eyes. Her fingers and toes have a vibrant purple tint at the tips. Her hair is made up of 2 yellow tentacles with a lock on the left side, close to her left eye. A small lock is further down her right side. She wears an orange headpiece that is inspired by either fried batter or mango chutney. She has yellow, triangular eyebrows. She has rather long pointed ears, the left ear having three piercings with eel tooth earrings. Her outfit is inspired by traditional Indian culture. It consists of a sleeveless bright yellow turtleneck crop top under a small yellow transparent shawl hanging over her shoulders, white baggy pants with 2 holes on the left side that have purple trims, and white toeless socks.

In Alterna, she also wears a tan and white eel mask, with possible inspiration taken from Japanese tanuki masks.

In her school days, Frye had her hair tied up in a small ponytail on top of her head with a smaller version of her fried squid ornament. She wore a black short-sleeved sailor fuku with a deep purple ribbon on the collar, thigh-length pants, and white loafers with a strap; unlike Shiver, she did not wear socks.

In the artwork for the music video of Suffer No Fools, Frye wears a hip-hop styled outfit, with her hair tied in four knots on the top of her head and having three small cuts on the left side of the hairline. She wears a black sleeveless crop top with Deep Cut's wordmark printed in white under her chest, holographic baggy pants, a pair of white tennis shoes with black details and red insteps, a thin silver chain necklace with a rectangular tag, and a black earring representing Deep Cut's logo on her left ear. Her ears and fingertips have a pink gradient.

For the Past vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, Frye wears a white long-sleeved bolero, a chrome strapless crop top, matching shorts with a thin strip circling each of her hips, and white laceless calf-length boots reminiscent of Order Boot Replicas. Her eyebrows and tentacles are colored white, matching Shiver's; the latter have a shorter side bang and are tied up in triangular buns, resembling imp horns, with a holographic X-shaped band. She also wears the same type of band on her left ear.

Personality[]

Frye is generally peppy and expressive and loves to dance and sing; Shiver states that she breaks into dancing spells randomly all the time, and she has various dances for multiple occasions, and likens her attacks in her boss fight to dances. She also has very exaggerated body language when talking and is very excitable, as well as is very enthusiastic about multiple things, from battle stages to the idea of dancing.

She is also apparently skilled at Tableturf Battle and does jokingly gloat about it, but it's all in good fun.

However, she does enjoy banditing and states that other than her day job of news-hosting it is what she enjoys most, and while telling Callie, Marie, and Agent 3 this grows annoyed when they are not scared (however her banditing is to steal treasure and give to the less fortunate, rather than taking all of it for herself), having a taunting side as well. She seems to enjoy having the spotlight as well, and jokingly states that she wants to steal the spotlight from Callie and Marie in hero mode.

She likens the different forms of her eel attacks to dances, and often dances when excited. Because of this, she is also extremely gluttonous, as evidenced by her Splatfest dialogue, where she frequently talks about food and chooses food-related teams. She has stated that she is not picky and will eat anything.

She has a younger brother and younger twin sister whom she loves dearly. She also loves her younger brother, but he seems to be in a rebellious phase lately.

Frye can also be slightly airheaded, noted for consistently breaking into dance in the middle of Salmon Runs instead of focusing on the enemy, as well as only focusing on the "big boss" rather than the lesser. She also prefers to use a head-on approach rather than a nuanced strategy, completely ignoring the Grizzco employee handbook and stating that her winning strategy for Turf War is to "splat your enemies...then splat them again! And again!" She can also be quite the prankster, as she has a habit of stealing her bandmates' snacks, and once gave Big Man a chocolate-covered onion on Valentine's Day.

History[]

Early life[]

Frye was born into the Onaga clan of the Onaga Ichimon as the eldest daughter of a family of eel charmers[2] well-known for representing the Splatlands for generations. She has a younger brother and two younger twin sisters. She was raised by her grandfather, as her parents have been traveling around the world since she was a child. Due to being busy with dance lessons and eel training, Frye notes not having had the time to make "real friends" as a child, although she used to sneak out quite a bit. She met Shiver and Big Man through their familial ties during their childhoods but remained nothing but acquaintances with them at the time.

In middle school, Frye was noted as "a little bit wild, a little bit reckless" student; in school, Frye was classmates with Shiver, and the two began looking out for each other, then started to bond over their shared love of singing. They would often go to the school rooftop and sing together, before deciding they wanted accompaniment, which lead to them seeking out Big Man, a pianist. This led to the formation of Deep Cut as it is known today.[3]

Deep Cut was formed several years later, where they took over a TV station and started hosting Anarchy Splatcast. It is assumed that they were later signed by a label and officially bought the TV station.

Splatoon 3[]

By the time of Splatoon 3, Deep Cut had become relatively well known within the Splatlands for both their music and the Anarchy Splatcast. As part of Deep Cut, Frye announces Big Runs, reports stage rotations, and hosts Splatfest events, performing her solo song, Anarchy Poisons (Snake Mix), and Anarchy Rainbow for the entire event. They are also the ones who initially report the news of the Great Zapfish's third disappearance.

Frye, Shiver, and Big Man appear in the single-player mode, where they at first attempt to fight Callie, Marie, and Agent 3 for treasure, and Frye ends up being the second, third, or fourth boss in the campaign. After all the boss fights against Deep Cut are won, Callie simply hands the treasure to the group, and Frye, along with the others, regrets fighting them at all with them explaining that their bandit activities were to give back to the people of the Splatlands, and never meant harm to the New Squidbeak Splatoon.

Under Big Man's suggestion, Callie and Marie end up being the managers of the group and the player's allies and help them in defeating Mr. Grizz. Frye uses her eel charming abilities to create a whirlpool that arcs high into the air, helping boost Agent 3 into outer space.

Etymology[]

"Frye" comes from "fry", the action of cooking food over heat. The relation to heat is in contrast to Shiver's name. A "fry" is also the collective term for a group of eels.

"Utsuho" is a rare Japanese female given name usually spelled with the kanji 空 (sky/void) or 空穂 (sky/void-ear), most notably used for the character Utsuho Reiuji from Touhou Project. It is also a pun on 鱓 utsubo, the Japanese word for "moray eel". This is in reference to Frye descending from a clan of moray eel users and having multiple different pet eels.

Trivia[]

  • Frye’s design, dances, and songs are inspired by Indian culture.
    • In addition, during her boss battle, Frye uses the Indian pungi flute to summon her eels. This type of flute is used for a variety of practices but is most commonly associated with snake charming.
  • Frye, just like every other Inkling idol before her, has golden eyes with cross-shaped irises.
  • Frye seems to be based on the vampire squid, a cephalopod with pointy ears and a large forehead. Interestingly, vampire squids are not true squids!
  • Frye is described to "sing with a melody that makes you feel as if a desert is in sight". However, unlike Shiver, her voice actress (Laura Yokozawa) has a jazz musical background.[5]
  • Frye's family crest depicts a pitcher plant, as in Japanese the word for pitcher plant, 靫葛; romanji: utsubokazura, and moray eel, 鱓; romanji: utsubo, are very similar.
  • Frye has a rebellious younger brother and twin younger sisters.
  • Dialog on the Anarchy Splatcast and her tableturf battle deck show that Frye prefers Splatanas.
  • Frye is the first inkling idol to have tinted finger tips. She is also the first idol to have her toes visible.
  • In the Japanese version, she speaks with the personal pronoun 儂 washi (most commonly used by old men), adding the particles じゃ ja, ぞ zo, and な na at the end of her sentences, and addresses people she isn't close with as お前さん omae-san. This pattern is close to the Hiroshima Chūgoku dialect, and thus (while sometimes being considered "old fashioned") has a "jolly" assiciation.
    • The connotation of speaking like an old person is lampshaded in the Japanese version, as she comments「最近の若いもんはつまらんのう」, meaning "the youth of today are so dull," during her first meeting with the New Squidbeak Splatoon.
    • The habit of using the pronoun washi was revealed to have been picked up from her grandfather, who raised her.
    • Also in the Japanese version, the phrasing Frye uses to describe herself ("dancing gangster"), also used as a subtitle in her boss fight, refers to moray eels being nicknamed "gangsters of the sea" (海のギャング) in Japan, hinting at her eel association.
