The level bar
Levels, also referred to in-game as Freshness, are progress indicators in Splatoon, Splatoon 2, and Splatoon 3. Levels are not infinite, and have a limit (ex: 50 is the limit in Splatoon, and 99* is in Splatoon 2). Levels do not affect the Hero Mode campaign.
Leveling up[]
Levels are earned by playing any online multiplayer mode. The amount of points received after a match goes towards the player's level. In Turf War points are awarded equal the the amount of turf covered and is equal to the coins received. In Ranked Battle points are awarded based only on victory or enemies splated. Each level will require more points than the last, resetting each time a level is gained. Levels unlock new weapons from Sheldon, as well as better gear and features.
As Splatoon 2.0.0 came out, upon reaching level 20 the leveling up process will change. Now in Turf War the player will get points if the player inks up territory first. If the player inks up territory that is worth 200p, the player will receive a +1. If the player inks up territory that is worth 400p, then their +1 turns into a +2. And if the player wins, they will receive an additional +3, earning 5 points in total if the player completes those tasks. In Ranked Battle points are awarded equal to the length of a match granting +1 every minute, an additional +3 is awarded to the winning team or they receive a flat +10 for a knockout victory. The player still receives points, but that goes towards coins and upgrading gear. The +1, +2, +3, and +10's go towards leveling up only.
In Splatoon 2, Levels can be earned through experience gained from multiplayer matches, which usually earn 300 for playing the full three minute time limit for Turf War, an additional 500 if the player covered enough area with their Ink during the match, and an extra 600 if their team won the match. One-time bonus experience can be gained by raising a weapon's Freshness up to a certain level through wins in matches. Unlike in Splatoon, Levels can go up to a maximum of 99, then be reset so the player has a star next to their level as they build it up again.
