— Marina to Pearl in Splatoon 2 character index

[1]

Marina Ida is one of the two members of the group Off the Hook. Her first appearance was in Splatoon 2 alongside her fellow band member Pearl Houzuki, acting as hosts for Inkopolis News. In game they are host of the Splatfests and represent their chosen team. During Splatfest for Splatoon 3 she and Pearl are given unique outfits.

Appearance[]

Splatoon 2[]

In Splatoon 2 and later carried over for the 'Inkopolis Square Expansion' in Splatoon 3., Marina's non splatfest appearance appears as a tall dark skinned Octoling, with her being taller than Pearl. Her tentacles are black in color with teal tips and appear to be a more grown out style of the one the Octoling soldiers wear. Like her fellow octolings she has cream undersides to her tentacles and and varying size of what looks like suction cups. Her eyebrows are shown to be a crescent shape and are the same shade of black found on her tentacles. Her octoling eye markings differ from the standard resembling long lashes. Her eyes are a teal color with a light orange pupil shaped similar to an octopus' when there is a high concentration of light.[2]

Her standard outfit consists of a black cropped top with a zip, black shorts, teal leggings, black boots and black gloves. Her blacked cropped top is sleeveless and stops at the upper rib showing her stomach and what appears to be a teal belly button piercing. The zip and zipper are large and grey in color. The black shorts have a drape like texture to them and are low cut. The teal leggings she wears are the same shade found on her tentacles. Her boots reach mid thigh and have a slightly lighter sole and have a grey color matching her zip and the zips found the boots. She also wears black headphones with a teal circle design on them.

Her splatfest outfits are typically a recolor of her standard one to match the themes colorations. This does not include the Final Fest Chaos Vs Order where she wore a new outfit. This being a silver metallic like dress with the same pupil design on the chest. This dress had blue square like panel at the end and marching the leggings she wore. The dress seemed to match her gloves silver color as well. In this costume she wore silver heels.

Octo Expansion[]

Within Octo Expansion Marina's height, hairstyle, skin color, piercing, headphones and eye color is carried over and in this appearance she has a more hip-hop inspired outfit. The style itself seeming to be referencing 90's rap black hip-hop fashion. In this appearance she wears a white bandana, white crop top, silver chain, denim jeans, grey trainers, silver bracelet and watch. The white bandana is tied in the front with the Paisley design made out of grey octopus tentacles on it. The white crop top is sleeveless and is a similar length to her standard one. The silver chain she wears is large and chunky with a large charm on it which is circular with what looks to be her pupil design in the center. The jeans she wears are a light mint green and are low rise and are rolled at the ankle. The grey trainers she wears lack laces and appear to have a bandana like fabric acting as them, they also have white soles. The bracelet she wears are plain silver and the watch has a rectangle design.

In the photos sent in Marina's Chat Room, she's depicted wearing the standard Octoling soldier uniform consisting of Octoling Goggles, Octoling Armor, and Octoling Boots and due to her ranking she had seaweed on the sides of her head.

Side Order[]

Similar to her first appearance her base features remain the same, these being skin tone and hairstyle are carried over.

Within Side Order she has two outfits. The first and more frequently shown is a her wearing an orange pant suit. The jacket is open with a royal purple interior the pants are a matching shade of orange and reach her the just above her ankle. While her hair style remains the same the tips it change to a royal purple matching the shade on the jackets, with this change she no longer is shown with her bellybutton piercing. She's shown to wear black stiletto heals with the same shade of purple on the underside of them. Her standard headphones have also been changed to a vintage style with the speakers being a grey colour with a teal circle connected by an two orange metal wires as the headband.

Her other appearance is shown in the First Climb 10F, in which she acts as the boss of the level. In this she is depicted in an outfit similar to the one she wore in the Final Fest however with the addition of rectangular goggles on her face, white squares on her cheeks and murky turquoise tentacles around her lower body, all the while connected to the machines in the control room. She's depicted larger than usual here with her being around four times to five times larger then Agent 8.

History[]

Early Life[]

Marina, like many Octolings, was born into Octarian society in the Octoling territory. According to the Marina's Chat Room Session 6 she was enrolled into 'Elementary training program' at 'Slimeskin Garrison' at the age of 6. During her time there she quickly skipping through the grades with her only taking advance courses during her attendance with her graduating at age 9. At the age of 10 she became a member of the Flooders design team. At 13 she left the Flooders design team returning to Slimeskin Garrison officially joining them, with her specialising in improving the weaponry.

Splatoon[]

At 16 Marina was assigned to DJ Octavio's wasabi supply unit before going AWOL the same year. This was after the hearing the the Squid Sisters perform their rendition of Calamari Inkantation, after DJ Octavio's fight with the original Agent 3 now known as Captain. After going AWOL she escaped to Mt Nanatai.

Prior to Splatoon 2[]

After arriving at Mt Nantai she met the inkling Pearl Houzuki, but due to her not understanding the Inkling Language Pearl assumed she was a 'country bumpkin'. The pair quickly became friends with Marina learning about the Inkling Language and culture from her. During this time she showed the demo for Ebb & Flow she made. Upon hearing the demo the pair quickly agreed to form the band Off the Hook. The duo released the finalised Ebb & Flow as their first single under the name Off the Hook, reaching great success and by their fourth single they were popular enough to take on the mantle of hosts for the Inkopolis News from the Squid Sisters.

Marina attempted to find Pearl again. When she did, she showed Pearl her musical abilities through her demo of Ebb & Flow and Pearl immediately agreed to them starting a band, forming Off the Hook in the process. They released Ebb & Flow as their first single, which was a hit. By the time of their fourth single, around nine months after the events of Splatoon, they had become popular enough to take over hosting Inkopolis News from the Squid Sisters.

Splatoon 2[]

In Splatoon 2 she and Pearl are famous in Inkopolis Square, with the duo being the presenters for the Inkopolis News and the Splatfests. During their time as hosts she took on the role of the calmer host but was able to make quick quips to match Pearl's energy. When they were hosting the splatfests she along with Pearl performed the song Color Pulse. She is absent from most of Hero Mode of the game despite it being her debut game, she and Pearl did however cover the news of the story's events, this being the of the disappearance and eventual reappearance the Great Zapfish. During the reappearance of them, due to a request, played the song Fresh Start leading to the game's credit scene.

Octo Expansion[]

With the purchase of Octo Expansion along side Splatoon 2's 3.1.0 update or later, the Inkopolis News will start as normal except a special segment will play before the stage announcements where in Pearl will cover what she and other inklings assume to be Squidkids 'sporting these weird hairstyles lately'. When Pearl states this Marina grows visibly nervous stating 'Squidkds? Oh... Um... Right.'[3] This nervousness continues through out the segment with her quickly encouraging Pearl they're out of time for the broadcast. This is due to the fact the kids being shown are in fact Octolings.

Off the Hook makes an appearance helping Agent 8 and Cap'n Cuttlefish by giving advice and commentary on Agent 8's tests. They meet the duo after Agent 8 passes Fake Plastic Station through Cap'n Cuttlefish's walkie-talkie as they were on Mount Nantai where the signal was the strongest, and Pearl and Marina call themselves MC. Princess and DJ_Hyperfresh respectively. If Agent 8 loses all of their lives in a test at least twice, Marina will offer to use Agent 8's test data and hack the Kamabo Corporation's data base to trick the test into thinking Agent 8 passed. If Agent 8 has less than 100 CQ Points, then Pearl will take money from her dad's wallet and Marina will transfer them into CQ Points.

She alongside Pearl later appear after the completion of A05 known as the stage Fake Plastic Station by Agent 8 as Cap'n Cuttlefish's on the radio by mistake alongside their location of Mt. Nanai which is stated by Cuttlefish to be near Octo Valley allowing the connection. During the gameplay she with Pearl and Cuttlefish with give commentary to Agent 8. Through gameplay Marina's Chat Room logs become available, where in she goes by the name DJ_Hyperfresh. During said gameplay if Agent 8' CQ point are below 100 Pearl will take money from her dad, which Marina will then turn into CQ points for the player to use. This done to prevent the player from locking themselves out of the game as CQ points are required to play stages. She will also offer to hack Kamabo Corporation's data base into thinking that Agent 8 passed, only if they lost all their lives twice. They don't however get a completely visible Mem Cake.

Within Marina's Chat Room sessions she's shown bantering with Pearl and Cuttlefish. During these sessions it's revealed to Pearl that she was part of Octarian Army, despite her nervousness it ends well with Pearl and Cuttlefish still being friends with her.

Upon all the 'Thangs' being collected, discovered to be a blender and the reveal that it was to be used to blend Agent 8 and Cuttlefish into raw material for sanitisation Marina is able to activate the Agent's distress signal which summoned Agent 3 allowing them to reach the helicopter she and Pearl are on. She's bumped out of the way while Pearl and Cuttlefish rap shown be done with the pair as she sighs. She is the second, after Agent 8 one to notice Commander Tartar revealing the NILS Statue from the ocean. Once Commander Tartar reveals his plans (and the statue's cannon) she quickly analysis it and forms a plan to stop it. She shows the plan it what seems to be an art program with some drawing of the, this plan is to cover the NILS Statue with ink using the prototype 'Hyperbombs' she had which would be manually detonated by agent 8. After Agent 8 completed this Pearl would hit it with a "full-power battle cry".[4] If the player is successful with completing the level she will tackle hug Pearl in celebration before the end credits.

In the bad, non canon ending, where the player is unsuccessful in the levels objectives depending on how far they were Marina can be shown and heard in distress at the NILS Statue activating say 'Inkopolis! This can't be...' as the city is covered with sanitisation goo.[5]

Splatoon 3[]

In Splatoon 3 she returns with Marina and they are stated to be on a world tour with their group Damp Socks Feat. Off the Hook.[6] Under this group songs can be found in game such as Tentacle to the Metal.

Side Order[]

After the character creation sequence for Agent 8, Pearl in her drone form states Marina is missing and the pair go looking for her. Inside the tower a voice can be heard that sounds like hers with what sound like 'help me' being said but in a distorted form due to static.

After Agent 8, Pearl and Acht complete the nine floors of the first climb the group reach the 10th, known as 10F and the Control room in game, is in. Once inside Marina is revealed in her boss form with Agent 8 and Pearl have to fight her in a mini boss fight. Once defeated the machine and tentacles releases her revealing her Final Fest outfit from Splatoon 2. After being dazed Order reveals themselves to have been using Marina as a host vessel.[7] She along with, Pearl and Agent 8 are ejected from the tower with Pearl keeping the pair afloat as they hold onto her.

After the introduction into the main story of Side Order she is seen in her new outfit, waking up Agent 8 with Pearl in her Inkling form. She thanks the Octoling for freeing her and reveals that Side Order is actually named the Memverse, which in itself is a prototype virtual reality she made to help sanitised Octolings. After apologising to the group she is more than willing to help them stop Order from bringing others in and helping those trapped in the Memverse be freed.

Once this cut scene is complete she can be found outside the tower where she will give her pallete to Agent 8 and help decrease the difficulty using Prlz as currency. She also states to Agent 8 the lockers have more palletes in the locker along with three keys to unlock the lockers. In the Locker you can find Marina's Dev Diary.

When travelling up the tower, she, along with Acht, remain in the elevator, but between floors talk with Pearl and Agent 8, and during levels will give advice to the player. Once the player reaches 30F and beats Overlorder and returns them to Smollusk, she and Pearl give a talk to the AI before they disappear and reveal an elevator. She can be seen standing in the elevator in the end credits occasionally interacting with Acht, Pearl and Agent 8.

After the events of Side Order, Marina and Pearl return to Inkopolis Square and back to their studio, thus allowing them to rejoin the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut with celebrating Splatfests until it was time for the Grand Festival, the Final Fest for Splatoon 3. During an interview, Marina, along with Pearl, agreed to collaborate with Shiver, Frye, Big Man, Callie, and Marie to arrange a new song performed by all seven of them, dubbing themselves the "Now Or Never Seven", to perform at the Grand Festival. The song was titled "Three Wishes" and was centered around how, for the Grand Festival, the Squid Sisters, Off The Hook, and Deep Cut, each took a side in the three way dispute over the topic for the Grand Festival: Past, Present, Or Future? Marina and Pearl sided with Team Present. On the last day of the Grand Festival, the Now Or Never Seven debuted Three Wishes, and it was an resounding success to ring out the end of the Grand Festival. Afterwards, Pearl and Marina joined the others with an afterparty concert with their song "Into The Light" before returning to Inkopolis Square and learning of the results of the Grand Festival, where Team Past and the Squid Sisters won, while Team Present and Off The Hook came in second. The results of the Grand Festival had a major effect on ending the rivalry between Splatsville and Inkopolis, seeing how happy everyone who came to the Grand Festival was when they saw the idols perform, especially during Three Wishes as the Now Or Never Seven, convincing Shiver and Frye to consider another collaboration with Marina, Pearl, Callie, and Marie in the future, but only if Big Man agreed to not do another collaboration without letting Shiver and Frye know first so they can take part as well. He agreed wholeheartedly.

Personality and traits[]

Marina is more reserved than Pearl, her bandmate, who she deeply cares about and is likely dating or even married to (her behavior implies an unyielding loyalty to Pearl: making a photo of her her computer’s Home Screen, designing a tower in the Memverse so Pearl could rescue her like a fairy-tale prince, with great emotion nearly proclaiming she loves Pearl while thinking Order is about to Grayscale her, and writing a shojo-style comic about her in the Splatoon manga; she was also described in an official work as a “Maiden in Love”). She speaks in a sweet, gentle manner, very excitable, and can get very sassy in response to others, though she appears to be shy as well. While she is reserved, she isn't worried over expressing herself, given her visual design. She seems to be pretty forgetful at times and has been observed to forget the news she and Pearl are broadcasting.

Through out her appearances she's shown to be the more reserved member of the duo that makes up Off the Hook with even the character index describing her as a "Real sweetheart".[8] That being said, despite her sweet demeanour she can have a sassy and teasing streak as within the Marina's Chat Room sessions she at one point kicked Pearl out to post a picture of her performing in her Metal singer era. She's also shown a secretive side with her not revealing to Pearl she was an Octoling, with it being revealed by Cuttlefish. This could also be due to her timidity however. This timidity being shown with her awkward smiles and waves, it is further implied by the resting worried expression on her eyebrows and her tendency to type excessively fast on her computer while stressed.

Within the Japanese version of Splatoon games and Japanese written media she is shown to occasionally use Katakana when speaking, this choice was likely done to differentiate the Octoling and Inkling language along with indicate linguistic differences. This is continued as when she sings her lyrics are in Katakana entirely, as shown in the Splatune 2 liner notes.

Marina is also shown to be a genius with her not only graduating early, being placed in specialist teams but also creating technology such as hyperbombs. She is humble and bashful about this fact however being quickly dismissive of praise about her talents.

In Side Order she can be seen left of the tower entrance and in the elevator between floors.

Trivia[]

  • It is confirmed that Marina is 18 according to Nintendo's Splatoon Twitter and the Splatoon 2 art book.
    • Marina refers to Pearl with the honorific "senpai" in the Japanese version of the game, which is an honorific used to address somebody of an elder social rank in a field or trade.
      • This implies that Marina may be either be younger than Pearl or less familiar or experienced in the Inkopolis industry and looks up to Pearl as a mentor or a respected figure who came before her. The Splatoon 2 artbook reveals Pearl is 3 years older, despite being shorter than her.
  • Marina takes her Japanese name from the webfoot octopus while Marine is short for "marination" and may also come from her English name. The double hyphen implies that the given name is first, rather than the family name.
  • Marina has some similarities with Marie:
    • Marina has a teal color scheme that is mistaken for green like Marie's green color scheme due to both duos being similar.
    • They're both expressive and excitable like Callie, and sassy and sarcastic like Marie.
  • Pearl and Marina's English names are possibly a pun on Pearl Harbor, as Marina's name is a synonym for harbor.
  • Both Marina and Pearl subtly break the fourth wall during one of the dialogues for Blackbelly Skatepark. When Pearl says: “Hey, kids-don't spend all your time in front of the TV! Go play outside!”. Marina then responds: “But how can they play video games if they're not in front of a TV?!”, slightly breaking the fourth wall, since they are referring to the players rather than the Inklings in the audience.
    • This dialogue is also a reference to the Nintendo Switch, since it is a hybrid console that can be played both in front of a TV and as a handheld.
  • In Sunken Scroll #2, revealed that Marina and some Octarians were at the final boss battle of Splatoon and thought that it was a concert.
  • In the Italian version, Marina and Pearl's names are changed to Alga and Nori, as a reference to "nori seaweed" in Italian.
    • The duo is called "Tenta Cool" in the Italian version.
    • Marina's name is Marie's name in the Italian version.
  • The Octo Expansion reveals that Ebb & Flow was Off the Hook's first song and has three reiterations of it in the Expansion.
    • Marina made a demo tape by herself with a half-broken keyboard on Mount Nantai before she met Pearl.
    • An "Octo" remix of the song plays when there's one minute left on Turf War on the NILS Statue.
    • A choral version of it plays when Commander Tartar is destroyed and Inkopolis is saved at the ending.
  • Pearl and Marina's official amiibo come with their outfits from the Octo Expansion.
  • Marina's full name as revealed in Octo Expansion is a combination of her English name Marina and her Japanese name Iida. This is true in the Japanese version as well, though Marina’s given name is Marine instead, making Iida her family name. This effectively gives Marina (nearly) the same full name across both the English and Japanese localizations, one of the only characters this is true for.
    • The Italian translation also references this by making her full name Nori Marinis.
  • In Japan, Marina's fanbase is known as Iidachi (イイダチ), which is a portmanteau of Marina's name, Iida, and tomodachi (友達), the Japanese word for "friend." The English equivalent to this name may be "Marination," as seen on the Marination Lace-Ups.
  • In one of her dialogues in Kelp Dome, Marina says her favorite vegetable are beets, a pun on beats, referencing to the fact that she remixes/creates beats as a DJ.
  • Marina's Japanese surname (that she is commonly referred as) is Iida, which is a common surname in Japan but also short for Iidako, Japanese for webfoot octopus. This could mean that Marina is that particular species, as Pearl and the Squid Sisters all have Japanese names that are puns on squid species.
