A splatted Inkling

"Splatting" is the act of using Ink to defeat other players and enemies.

Details[]

To "splat" an opponent in the Splatoon series, the player shoots the opponent with their Ink. Once the opponent is completely covered with their Ink, that opponent bursts into more Ink with the player's color.

Inklings who get "splatted" with have a little squid-like ghost floating away back to their team's Respawn Point, while playable Octolings have an octopus-shaped ghost, though this difference is only aesthetic. Some Octarians also have this animation.

Attempting to splat Cap'n Cuttlefish, Callie or Marie will not have an effect. Cap'n Cuttlefish and Callie will be covered in Ink, but stay intact, while Marie will use her umbrella to deflect the shots.

If the player touches Water or falls off the map, they will also get splatted and have to respawn from the nearest checkpoint.

Trivia[]

  • When Agent 8 gets splatted during the Escape Phases, they will die and not respawn, hence the dialogue coming afterwards.
  • It is possible that being “splatted” is when an inkling or octoling truly does die, and that it is only due to the respawn points that they can keep living. The visual effect of the “ghost” seems to point towards this.
  • Being splatted physically hurts inklings and octolings. During their boss fights, after the third phase is completed (having been splatted three times in a row) Shiver and Frye both move as if wounded and say “oww”, as if they’ve been battered or bruised. After nearly being splatted but escaping into ink, a player’s inkling or octoling can be heard quietly moaning in pain.
