Tableturf Battle is a minigame in Splatoon 3. Its main hub for playing is located in Splatsville at the Tableturf Battle dojo, and it is run by a character only known as 'Staff' who resembles an Oranda Goldfish. You can also play with friends online at the tables in the Lobby.
Gameplay[]
Tableturf Battle is a Tetris-style 12 round card game played by two players. Both players must try to cover the most and the winner is the player with the most squares covered at the end of the game. "Turf" in this minigame refers to a square tile on the board; there are various boards of different shapes and sizes to play on.
The game starts with the players shuffling their decks and drawing 4 cards into their hand. The player may redraw their hand if they want, but only once. Each player starts off with a single square in a fixed position on the board. Both players take their turns at the same time, choosing one card from their hand and placing it adjacent (including diagonals) to an existing square of their own color. A card cannot be placed on an already owned square (except with specials), but when two cards are places in the same place in a turn then the card with the lowest value will win the overlapping squares; if the cards are of the same value, then the overlapping will be filled in white and neither player then owns those squares or can claim them, even with Specials. Most card's coverage has one special square which cannot be beaten by a lower value card unless the special square of the lower value card would cover over the special square of the higher value card. Only the cards based on Special Weapons do not have a special square.
If every adjacent square surrounding a special square is covered by either player then the owner will receive one special point. Alternatively, a player can pass on a turn, discarding one card but gaining a special point. Each card has a special cost, and in exchange for that many special points, a card can be placed over already-owned squares (except special squares). When using a special, the card must be placed adjacent to one of the player's special squares.
Stages[]
There are 8 stages to play on. Most stages have between 225 and 250 squares of turf, but one stage, Box Seats, has only 100 squares of turf instead. At the start of the game, only Main Street is unlocked to test out decks in - as your Tableturf Rank increases, you will be able to practice on more and more stages.

Cards[]
Each player can build a deck of 15 cards each based on their in-game weapon, special, character or other entity. Each card has an associated rarity, turf coverage and special point cost which can be seen when selecting cards to build a deck with.
There are 175 cards in the game as of Version 2.0.0, and each player receives a predetermined starter deck of 15 cards when first playing the game. Booster packs can be obtained in the single player campaign, through the Catalog, by leveling up your Tableturf rank or through the Shell-Out Machine in the lobby.
Card-Bits[]
When receiving a card you already own from a booster pack, you will instead receive Card-Bits. They can be exchanged for an unobtained card (at a rate of 5 bits for a Common, 15 for a Rare or 40 for a Fresh card) or used to upgrade a card via the Card-Bit Exchange in the Card List menu. Upgrading a card changes the design, but doesn't affect the card's stats. The full card list can be viewed in game in the Card-Bit Exchange.

Opponents[]
There are currently a total of 19 NPC opponents for you to face, each with three different levels of difficulty. When an opponent is first unlocked, you can only play against them at Level 1, which earns you 100 Tableturf Points on defeat. After defeating them 3 times, their Level 2 counterpart is unlocked, who give 115 Tableturf points on defeat. Defeating their Level 2 counterpart 3 times unlocks their Level 3 counterpart, which gives 130 Tableturf Points on defeat - after defeating their Level 3 counterpart 30 times, if they have an unique card sleeve, you'd win it.
Some opponents also require you to have completed a specific mission within Hero Mode before you can challenge them in addition to their Rank requirements.

Apart from the NPCs, you can challenge other players around the Tableturf Battle Dojo or at Hotlantis to a battle - however, you will be facing against an AI using their current custom deck, and the stage they'd play you on is randomized when you first choose to challenge them, but will remain that stage until they leave. It is possible that they may offer more points than a Level 3 NPC can, but their AI may be even harder than a Level 3 NPC AI.
Ranks[]
As you complete full games of Tableturf Battle, you gain Tableturf Points. Each time you gain enough Tableturf Points, your Tableturf Rank will increase, gaining you a new reward, which can include new opponents to face against, Tableturf Battle card packs, the ability to practice your decks on new maps, additional titles and banners for your Splashtag, stickers and items for your Locker, new card sleeves, and even a new Emote.
After rank 50 you earn 20 card bits every 5 ranks. Addition to that, you also earn a badge and fresh card pack every 100th rank up to rank 999.
